Finding the best wooden toys for kids can feel overwhelming with so much choice available. Beautifully made wooden toys offer something special — they encourage imaginative play, creativity and learning while being designed to last through years of childhood adventures.
At Sonny Bear, we’ve carefully selected some of our favourite wooden toys for children in Ireland, from imaginative playsets and puzzles to vehicles, role-play toys and beautiful gifts. In this guide, we’ll share what to look for when choosing a wooden toy and some of our favourite options for different ages.
Why Choose Wooden Toys for Children?
Wooden toys are a wonderful choice for children because they encourage open-ended, imaginative play. Simple designs allow little ones to create their own games and stories, helping to develop creativity, problem-solving skills and independence as they play.
At Sonny Bear, we choose beautifully designed wooden toys that combine quality, durability and play value. Many are made to be enjoyed for years, making them a thoughtful choice for birthdays, Christmas and everyday play.
1. Wooden Toys for Imaginative Play
Imaginative play is one of the biggest benefits of wooden toys. Play kitchens, dolls houses, shops, garages and role-play sets give children the freedom to invent stories, copy everyday life and create their own little worlds.
Tender Leaf Toys is a lovely choice for imaginative wooden play, with beautifully designed playsets, vehicles and role-play toys that encourage children to explore and create. These are the kinds of toys that can grow with a child and be enjoyed in different ways as their imagination develops.
2. Wooden Puzzles & Learning Toys
Wooden puzzles and learning toys are a brilliant way to combine play with early development. Shape sorters, matching games, stacking toys and chunky puzzles can help children practise hand-eye coordination, concentration and problem-solving while having fun.
For younger children, look for simple designs with easy-to-hold pieces, familiar animals, vehicles or colourful shapes. As children grow, more detailed puzzles and games can provide an extra challenge and keep them engaged for longer.
3. Wooden Role-Play Toys
Role-play toys give children the chance to copy the grown-ups around them and turn everyday activities into imaginative games. Wooden tea sets, play food, tool sets, shops and kitchens can inspire hours of pretend play while helping children develop language, social skills and confidence.
Beautifully made role-play toys also make wonderful birthday and Christmas gifts because they can be enjoyed independently, with siblings or with friends.
4. Wooden Vehicles & Transport Toys
Cars, trains and other wooden vehicles are timeless favourites for children who love things that move. Simple transport toys encourage children to create roads, journeys and adventures of their own, supporting imaginative play as well as hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
Wooden vehicles can also work beautifully alongside garages, play mats and small-world playsets, allowing children to build a larger world of play over time
5. Wooden Toys for Toddlers
For toddlers, the best wooden toys are usually simple, sturdy and easy for little hands to explore. Stacking toys, shape sorters, pull-along toys, simple puzzles and wooden animals can encourage coordination, problem-solving and imaginative play without being overly complicated.
When choosing wooden toys for younger children, always check the recommended age and choose toys designed specifically for their stage of development.Looking for age-specific ideas? Read our guide to the Best Toys for 2 Year Olds in Ireland.
6. Wooden Toys That Make Beautiful Gifts
A beautifully made wooden toy can make a memorable gift for a birthday, Christmas or another special occasion. Unlike toys that may quickly be outgrown, well-chosen wooden toys often encourage different types of play as children develop and can become much-loved favourites.
From wooden playsets and puzzles to role-play toys and vehicles, choose something that suits the child's age and interests. For a special gift, we love toys that combine beautiful design with plenty of opportunities for imaginative play.
